  1. Accommodation Expectations
  • Basic tea houses (simple rooms)
  • Shared toilets in many villages
  • Limited hot showers (sometimes extra charge)
  1. Extra Important Tips
  • Carry enough cash (no ATMs in Upper Mustang)
  • Start booking early (permits take time)

What are the most interesting things in Upper Mustang Trek?

The Upper Mustang Trek is often called a journey into the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” and its real charm is that it feels like stepping into a completely different world inside Nepal. The most interesting things along the trek are a mix of culture, history, and unique Himalayan desert landscapes.

Here are the top highlights:

  1. Lo Manthang – The Walled Kingdom

Lo Manthang
This is the crown jewel of the trek. It’s a medieval walled city that used to be the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Lo. Inside the walls you’ll find:

  • Narrow alleyways and whitewashed houses
  • A historic royal palace
  • Ancient monasteries with wall paintings
  • Prayer wheels and chortens everywhere

Walking here feels like stepping 500 years back in time.

  1. Sky Caves of Upper Mustang

Chhoser Cave Complex
One of the most mysterious parts of the region:

  • Thousands of man-made caves carved into cliffs
  • Some used for meditation, burial, or living spaces
  • Multi-storey cave systems with ladders inside
  • Ancient artifacts and Buddhist murals found in some caves

These caves are a big reason Upper Mustang is so unique in the Himalayas.

  1. Ancient Monasteries (Gompas)

Important monasteries you pass or visit include:

  • Ghar Gompa (very old and spiritually important)
  • Luri Gompa (hidden cave monastery with murals)
  • Thubchen & Jampa monasteries in Lo Manthang

They show strong Tibetan Buddhist culture that is still alive today.

  1. Tiji Festival (if timing is right)

Tiji Festival
If your trek matches the dates (spring season), you may see:

  • Masked lama dances
  • Ritual storytelling of good vs evil
  • Three-day celebration inside Lo Manthang

It’s one of the most vibrant cultural experiences in Nepal.

  1. Desert-like Himalayan Landscape
  • Dry, wind-carved cliffs and red rock formations
  • Wide open valleys with dramatic skies
  • Looks more like Tibet than green Nepal
  • Colorful eroded hills and deep river gorges

This “Himalayan desert” feel is completely different from Annapurna or Everest trails.

  1. Traditional Villages on the Route

Villages like Kagbeni, Ghami, Tsarang, and Chele offer:

  • Old mud-brick houses
  • Mani walls with carved prayers
  • Local Loba Tibetan-influenced culture
  • Quiet, authentic mountain lifestyle
  1. Views of Hidden Himalayas

On clear days you can see:

  • Annapurna range
  • Nilgiri peaks
  • Dhaulagiri massif

⭐ In short:

Upper Mustang is special because it combines:
ancient Tibetan culture + hidden desert landscapes + cliff caves + medieval walled city life

  • You must book through a government-registered trekking company in Nepal
  • You cannot apply directly as an individual

The agency will:

  • Submit your passport details
  • Process permits through the Department of Immigration
  • Arrange guide and trekking logistics

  • You must trek with a licensed guide
  • Traditionally, a minimum of 2 trekkers was required
  • Recent updates allow solo trekkers, but still only through a trekking agency with a guide

Prepare these for your agency:

  • Passport (valid at least 6 months)
  • Nepal visa copy
  • 2–4 passport-size photos
  • Trek itinerary (agency provides this)

    • ~$500 per person for 10 days
    • +$50 per extra day
  • ACAP Permit:
    • Around NPR 3,000 (~$25–30)
  1. Where Permits Are Issued

All permits are processed in:

  • Kathmandu or Pokhara (through trekking agencies only)
  • Final entry checkpoint is usually Kagbeni, where RAP starts being checked
  1. How Long It Takes
  • Usually 1–3 working days once documents are submitted
